BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This is a National body of Bodaboda riders in Kenya Dully Registered under the Kenyan Societies act.

Since the inception of transport, a lot of changes have been experienced and as more inventions are made, human beings are trying to invent more comfortable ways of moving both goods and themselves.

Bodaboda is one of the most used means of transport in the world and in particularly Kenya. It is almost impossible currently in Kenya to complete transportation without the use of Bodabodas.

From taking people to work, children to school, farm produce to market and even sick to hospital. It is therefore a vital organ in the transport sector and cannot be ignored.

I would like to highlight some of the benefits that those bodaboda people have brought to us as society.

EMPLOYMENT

The industry is currently the biggest single employer in the republic of Kenya. With over 1.2 million youths employed. This is because some do share one motorbike for them to earn a living raising the number. It has reduced the burden and pressure on the government for employment you can imagine all those youths on motorbike without any source of income and seeking employment.

TRANSPORT

The industry has propelled the transportation sector to another level by opening up the former inaccessible roads in the village, where matatu would not access and people were forced to walk for a very long distance due to poor infrastructure, this did waste a lot of time and lose of economic growth.

The industry also helps in beating traffic jams in urban areas and people get to their meetings early making the entire public to embrace it.

ECONOMIC GROWTH

The families of the riders have now good living standards, there is cash flow as the riders consume fuel in petrol stations, food, health care, transportation of agricultural goods to markets which owners also sale in time to earn an income, transportation of business people, all this contributes to cash flow which impacts heavily on the country’s economy. It has transformed and elevated many Kenyans from normal lower class where people used to go without food and we are now heading to middle class even though we are not yet there but we are moving towards vision 2030.

IMPROVEMENT OF LIFE

Now the bodaboda riders are constructing homes

They can afford to feed their families

They can pay for quality education

They can pay for quality health care

Social well being as they do ferry people to church

CHALLENGES

To The government

However every good thing has its challenges. Over some years, there have been some accidents associated with bodaboda.

Many hospitals have beds set aside for bodaboda riders because they are the most affected in road accidents. This hurts the government due to pressure in hospitals and to the economy as no revenue generation occurs when one is hospitalized but he or she consumes the available little resources.

To the public and family

Accidents are the most hurting log in eyes of the families and Kenyans at large, during this period, incase of death the family loses the only breadwinner or when hospitalized, the family is drained to poverty because they spend every little penny they have on hospital bills, repaying loans as many motorbikes are borrowed, this reduces these families to a more poorer life than they were living before.

To the rider

Riders face many challenges starting from lack of

  • Driving licenses and road safety skills,

  • Many riders are poor hence they can’t afford the high cost of obtaining a driving license, or rather training before joining the industry.

  • Many riders don’t have knowledge on road safety which leads to high rate of accidents

Insurance

Most riders are not compensated during an accident or after a motorbike theft and yet they had paid all their premiums, this returns them to severe poverty mostly when a motorbike was on loan

Robbers

Many riders die in hands of mercy less robbers who kill them and take their bikes, This leaves their family in grief and double tragedy if the motorbike was on loan.

Lack of designated areas, recognized and sheltered as many operators spend the whole day in the scorching sun and when it rains they are rained on. This puts their health life in danger.

Harassment

Riders face harassment from law enforcers eg, Police and city Askaris. Those in urban areas face county Askari harassment that arrests them sometimes with no valid reasons.

Lack of proper government recognition of this industry as public means of transport and gazette it. In Kenya the motorbike is not fully recognized as public means of transport by the law and yet it has created employment for many youths.
